Comparison
Venetian plaster vs limewash: which wall finish is right?
Both are lime-based, breathable and beautiful — but one is polished to a luminous depth and the other left soft and matte. Here's how Venetian plaster and limewash compare.

Both lime. Two very different moods.
Venetian plaster and limewash share a mineral, lime-based DNA and a breathable, natural quality. But Venetian plaster is troweled and burnished into a smooth, deep, sometimes glass-like surface, while limewash is brushed on for a soft, cloudy, matte wash of colour. One reads as polished and refined; the other as relaxed and characterful.
At a glance
| Compare | Venetian plaster | Limewash |
|---|---|---|
| The look | Smooth, polished, deep — satin to high sheen | Soft, matte, a cloudy movement of colour |
| Feel | Solid, stone-like, tactile | Chalky, breathable, painterly |
| Where it suits | Feature walls, refined interiors, wet areas (sealed) | Whole rooms, relaxed spaces, some exteriors |
| Application | Multiple troweled coats, burnished by hand | Brushed on in washes; more forgiving |
| Over time | Hard, sealable for high-wear and damp areas | Softer; ages and patinas, refreshed by re-coating |
| Typical cost | $20–45 / sq ft | $6–14 / sq ft |

The short answer
For a polished, deep, statement wall, Venetian plaster. For a soft, matte, lived-in colour across a room, limewash. They're not competing for the same look — they're two ends of the lime-finish spectrum, and we'll help you place your project on it.
